Memorial Day is a day to remember the men and women who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. It is a day to celebrate the freedom we have, thanks to the sacrifices others have made. It is a federal holiday observed each year in the United States and is usually spend honoring traditions.
One of the longest standing traditions is the running of the Indianapolis 500, an auto race which has been held Memorial Day weekend since 1911. It runs on the Sunday preceding the Memorial Day holiday.
My husband has been participating in this long standing tradition for the last couple of years with his uncle and some family friends. They pack lunches, soak themselves in sunscreen, and make sure to bring along ear plugs for their fun filled day on the track. They come back with a mixture of excitement and exhaustion and usually a tinge of pink to their skin from long hours spent in the sun. It is a long weekend, but not nearly long enough. It always seems to go by so quickly and in the blink of an eye it is gone.
