Stylish Functional Toddler Tableware

For the past year and a half my son has been using plastic monkey head plates that I bought as decorative plates for his first birthday. I don't think that these plates were intended for daily use by a toddler, but they have held up surprisingly well. Although I do not use them in the microwave, they get washed in the dishwasher almost every day. Well, I am tired of transferring food from microwave safe dishes to non-breakable dishes my toddler can eat off of.

We are getting to the point where my son is able to drink from a regular cup. I guess it is time to upgrade. I am in the market for plastic cups, bowls, and plates. The bowls and plates should be microwave safe, dishwasher safe, and non-breakable.

I know… a lot to ask of tableware right? Apparently it is.

Almost every dish I come across is not microwave safe. Don't people realize the amount of leftovers a toddler eats? I mean really, toddlers do not typically sit and eat their whole meal in one sitting. There always seems to be leftovers in my home. The last thing I want to do is dirty more dishes than necessary.

If the tableware I run across is microwave safe, it is not dishwasher safe. And if it is dishwasher safe it is only dishwasher safe for the top shelf of the dishwasher... I don't know about you, but I usually put dirty plates on the bottom shelf of my dishwasher. I must have a teeny tiny dishwasher, because plates do not fit on the top shelf of my dishwasher. This is utter laziness, but I am not cleaning all of my son’s dishes by hand. They can go in the dishwasher just like all of the other dishes.

Tableware should not make your life more difficult. In fact it should do just the opposite; tableware should make your life easier.

I am not going to buy paper plates and be wasteful. At the same time, I am not going to purchase tableware that is not functional. I am therefore asking for help from all you moms out there.

If you know of stylish functional toddler tableware feel free to pass along your knowledge. Please leave a comment letting me know how you tackled toddler tableware.

Thanks in advance.

  1. This is the perfect time of year to ask that question! We found ours at Target one summer. They have a large selection of plastic dishes in their "seasonal". It's marketed toward outdoor eating. Ours has held up through years of being put in the microwave and dishwasher. Good luck!
