To pee or not to pee; the joys of potty training.

I have been struggling with potty training my two-year old son. He likes his potty. He likes to sit on hit potty. He will even sit on his potty naked. He will not pee or poop in his potty.

Enough is enough. Diapers are outrageously expensive when you are buying them for two children. Especially as they outgrow the smaller size diapers. It seems that as the diaper size goes up the quantity of diapers keeps going down. But the price just stays the same. GGGgggrrr!

Today I decided we were going to have a naked morning with lots and lots of juice and fruit.

I brought the potty downstairs. I brought the chocolate M&M’s downstairs (yes I bribe my kid to sit on and use the potty- don’t judge me). I brought the sippy cup of apple juice and bowl of fruit downstairs. I took off my toddlers pajamas and diaper and sat him on the potty. I even pulled out the Lego table for my toddler to play with while sitting on his potty.

I start trying to make watery sounds in the hopes that this will inspire my son to pee in his potty. Drip, splash, swish… none of my watery noises are working and I feel like an idiot.

Time for a refill on juice. I run upstairs to refill the juice and as I come down the stairs I see my son start to stand up… oh no.

“William sit on the potty! Pee pee goes in the potty!” I say as I race to my toddler. He stands up, takes two steps away from his potty and proceeds to pee on my carpet. I grab the potty and try to catch the stream of pee shooting out of my son while repeating “Pee pee goes in the potty. Pee pee goes in the potty.” I keep repeating this like it’s my own personal mantra.

If at first you do not succeed, do not get angry, try again. Okay… Refill of apple juice in hand I sit my toddler back down on the potty and tell him very nicely that pee pee goes in the potty (in case he missed it the first sixty times I said it).

I clean up the pee from the carpet. I give my son a couple more M&M’s for sitting on the potty and trying again. We turn on Bubble Guppies (Thank you brother-in-law Ron for this fabulous Rock & Roll cartoon) and wait. We wait and drink juice and eat fruit and play on our Lego table. We wait and wait and wait some more.

Then my son starts to stand up… And I promptly sit him back down on his potty and tell him to pee in his potty. I tell him if he pees in his potty he will get more potty treats. That must have clicked. He sits back down and promptly pees in his potty! Hooray!!!!

I hand over a handful of chocolaty goodness and continue to clap and praise my son for being a big boy and peeing in the big boy potty. I no longer feel like a complete failure at potty training. I know we are not completely potty trained and we have a long way to go before we are, but at least we are moving in the right direction.

  1. So how does this work? Do you do this every day? Once a week? Once a month? William is smart. He's no dummy. He knows what to do.....maybe he just doesn't WANT to do it.

  2. We have been working on this daily... He is too funny though. If I am not right there to make sure he pees in the potty he will try and go hide to pee. He has peed on my computer chair, the leg of his train table, behind his climber, and all over the carpet. My mother bought me a carpet cleaner for Christmas this last year and it could not have been a more appropriate gift!
